Backlund Paddles Like Old Friends

Keith Backlund got into making paddles because he couldn’t afford one.  “I was a wood carver since age seven.  I made ax handles for my grandfather who was a lumberjack all his life.  Then all his friends got ax handles, so by age 12 I was making ax handles for lots of people.  Once a Swedish engineer from New York saw one of my ax handles and my grandfather told him that his grandson had made it. The man said ‘Impossible!’  My grandfather said that guy didn’t know a thing!”
